  5.     What's the point of being neutral if there are no longer two
  6. sides? That's what Sweden's Parliament asked itself last week
  7. when it voted 287 to 40 to apply for membership in the European
  8. Community, departing from a national tradition of sitting on
  9. the geopolitical fence. "The collapse of the communist
  10. dictatorships in Eastern Europe has changed the military map,"
  11. says Lotta Forsman, an E.C. expert at the Foreign Ministry,
  12. "and consequently the basis for Sweden's neutrality."

  14.     Swedes have long fretted that E.C. membership would dilute
  15. their country's elaborate welfare apparatus. But with the
  16. economy in decline, there seemed little to lose from joining
  17. the Community. There appear to be no insurmountable obstacles
  18. to the admission of Sweden, given its modern economy and stable
  19. government.
